An associate pastor in
Colorado was offering the morning ‘welcome’ to his gathered congregants,
immediately following the opening hymn. He got a couple of things mixed
up in his head and enthusiastically directed, “Now…let us turn and
worship each other!”
At Cedar Mill Bible
Church we certainly do not worship each other, but we do warmly and
kindly welcome each other! One of the obvious ways in which this is
done is in our corporate worship. Because we are an inter-generational
church, we have agreed that almost all styles and preferences are
‘valid’ in our expression of worship to God, and we creatively offer
them together.
Aside from our
commitment to welcoming and sacrificially loving each other, our broad
worship voice reflects a theological premise as well: Worship is the
retelling of the Christ Story in our time and space—it is an
‘incarnational’ re-presentation of God’s love for us, as expressed in
the gift of His Son, and furthered by the powerful work of the Holy
Spirit—a story in which we find ourselves today.
We want to use all of
the resources we can in order to participate in this ongoing work of God
as we meet together each week. So it is not unordinary to find
ourselves engaged by elements such as strong biblical teaching, hymns
and choruses, drums and drama, choirs of all ages, congregational and
presentational music, and video as you encounter the present risen
Christ at Cedar Mill.
As you join us, we
won’t worship your craft or your voice or your individual
offering, but we will gladly welcome you as a part of our
collective articulation of our developing understanding of, response to,
and gratitude for the continuing work the God—in, for, and through us!
